Artists I Like - Sam Kieth

A fun little idea I had where I talk on and on about certain artists I think are awesomw an d kewl!!!!!! Will be doing more of these I'm sure, so there'll now be a whole new tag for these blog posts entirely!!! :)

The artist I wanted to talk about today is someone that, for how somewhat recently I've started following their work, has had a surprising effect on me and what I find interesting within the art sphere. Sam Kieth is, or at least was, a prominent figure within the comic scene, working on many many major projects over the years he's been active. From being the artist on multiple Marvel and DC comics, like Wolverine and Sandman, to his own original series 'The Maxx' being quite popular and even spawning a tv show of the same name. He's definitely been around, which makes sense when taking a look at his art.

Unlike most big, well-known artists, Sam has a pretty hefty and comprehensive portfolio of work, which can be seen through his blogspot.

Which has seemingly been going on for more than a decade and a half now. Funny how there's so much stuff here to shift through and look at considering he's somewhat of a recluse and hasn't had much of a presence on the internet for a couple of years now.

Something notable about his work is just how much it can vary, one piece may be a stockily built superhero comic cover, the next could be weird and otherworldly abstract art, or a really goofy looking cartoon character, and everything in-between.

His use of watercolor, markers, and pastels help to make really interesting and colorful pieces, that mixed with traditional pencils and pens create such a unique look and feel that I absolutely adore. The way he draws faces is an aspect of his style I particularly like, being able to evoke such a dreaded look or such a happy-go-lucky expression really drives home how skilled he is.

The way he draws and shapes characters is also such a treat, with the Maxx constantly hunched over, almost inhuman in a way, hm... i wonder why that is..... Ol, Mr. Gone with his oblique but also droopy caped attire and long phallic head, Sarah and her whispy entangled mess of hair, mixed with her silhouetted look make her a favorite of mine. The way he designs and draws these and many more characters make me scratch my head in a funny way.

I could go on for so long about his art, many things I didn't even mention here, such as his affinity for word art and logo's, his background art, and etc etc etc. But this is already too long, and I want later posts like this to be a bit more compact, there was just a lot here that I really did want to show lol. I also want future posts like this to be less "omg i luv this dood's art lolz!!!!" and more analytic but whatever i dont care.

thx 4 reading, loser :)
