Cool Pieces of Animation

Recently I've come across some cool pieces of animation and I'd love to just gush over them since they're so cool!!!!!!!!!!!

LE MERLE - Norman McLaren, 1958

I was so utterly surprised at just how much I ended up liking 'Le Merle', seeing as it is extremely simple but so fun to watch and listen to as well!

The animation uses paper cutouts and simple lines and shapes to show a bird dancing to a French folksong, with the bird constantly transforming based on the rhythm of the song. It helps show just how much action and movement you can convey with so few lines, as it changes from a bird, to a tic-tac-toe board, to a dancing stickman hopping on one leg, to an amalgamation of shapes and lines in all but a few short moments. That, along with the nonsensical song that fluctuates in tension throughout really helps create something really fun and cool to see!

Piano Dog Visits the Underworld - Karl Staven, 2003/2004?

This is a very very obscure short film made seemingly around 2003 or 2004. In where a piano dog and his musical friends become trapped in hell, and they then get eaten by some dog thing, spat out, and go back to whence they came. I'm not sure why this was made and if it was ever aired anywhere, especially since this is a cut down and edited version of the original 25 minute version that I cannot find anywhere, but it's cool nonetheless.

The weird 2D, paper mario-esque characters in a 3D plane definitely give this a unique look. That mixed with the 480p quality and nonsense story make this a strange little thang, ain't that right, mhmm uh huh yeah.

Today, I Will Be The Bread - Andy Cahill, 2024

Another completely inane and nonsensical film titled 'Today, I Will Be The Bread' is, not really about anything in particular, and is mainly just a showcase of fun and trippy visuals.

I love just how mushy everything looks, nothing seems to have any structure or solid shape. People and animals moving with the consistency of dough, buildings making no logical sense whatsoever, and things just kind of happen. It really is worth a watch since it can't really be described properly.

That's as much as I wanted to show, will absolutely make more of these kinds of posts in the future so whatevurh waha wehewhhehebehebfheweskuh
