Line art/Linewidth, Outlines, and Shadows in Art and Animation!!!

I think one of the biggest things that interests me in relation to art/animation is outlines and the use of black shadows, or more specifically how they can be used to enhance something. Many of my all time favorite shows, movies, comics, and etc. have a big focus on line art and whatnot, which is why I like them so much!!!!!

The bold outlines and shadows of I Feel Sick instantly come to mind, I love Jhonen Vasquez's stuff in general, but this comic really insinuates how line art/shadows can add to a character.

This sorta 'tenebrism' technique, in which shadows and a bolder black silhouette take prominence over a character or scene help to create a good sense of tension/mystique.

Which is featured not even in just I Feel Sick, but in Vasquez's style over all. Like in Invader Zim or especially in JTHM, which is entirely black and white and focuses heavily on shadows/line width.

It really does show just how influential outlines can be when you strip a lot of other aspects of art off, like shading, detail, etc. and can still create something visually stunning. This is extremelyyyy prominent in the UPA style, with characters and settings that rely mainly on that sorta thing.

Fudget's Budget is probably the most extreme example of using an outline to define your art, rarely is there a full background or comprehensible setting shown, and characters move by flipping around or squirming about. Depending fully on the colored lines to make sense of what's happening.

You should give it a watch if you haven't seen it, as it's an amazing display of this sorta stuff, and my horrible description doesn't do it justice.

This kind of thing is shown to a lesser extent in a lot of UPA inspired shows that came out around the 90's and 2000's. Like Clone High, The Powerpuff Girls, Clerks Animated, Dexter's Lab, blah blah blah, etc. etc. Using bold outlines and sharp angles that give a distinct look and cool badass fucking awesome edge to them!!!!

It's also not like a thinner or alternating linewidth is bad though!!!!!! I love me some good pen pressure and thin outlines, it's what I use quite a bit in my art honestly, with certain parts being more heavily outlined or thinned out than others.

But yea that's my dumb little post about stupid little crap nobody but me cares about!!!!!!!!!! Might make mor posts like this if I feel like it!!! Hope you cared enough to read this far and ty!!!!!!!! As I always say, "an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind." Lol XD!11!1!!!1!!!1!!!1!1
